Sarbey Associates offers services by Marty Sarbey de Souto, CTC. She holds a B.A. degree in Journalism from the University of Arizona; the CTC stands for Certified Travel Counselor, an advanced travel career designation granted by The Travel Institute in the Boston area. She also holds a life-time Community College teaching credential.
After college graduation, Marty headed for Europe for a year-long stint including such eclectic activities as theatre and ballet in London, a French Civilization class in Paris, a course in modeling, and afternoons spent at museums or the major Parisian fashion shows of the season. As winter set in, she headed south through Spain and Italy. And, when money and time ran out, she returned to the U.S. and began her travel industry career working in a student travel company in Manhattan.
One day one of the tour leaders became ill, and on overnight notice Marty escorted her first tour – a group of teenagers on a six-week rail tour across the U.S., down through Mexico, back up across the gulf coast and eastern seaboard, returning to New York. From that time she was “hooked” and the company then asked her to direct future tours in Mexico and South America.
After four years in the student travel business, she moved to Berkeley, California and continued her career, doing summer educational trips for San Francisco State University and continuing education trips for such professional organizations as the California Dental Association, California Teachers Association, the University of California Radiology Department and others. In later years she moved to a company owned by the California Farm Bureau Federation and operated agricultural tours and overseas trade missions to a number of world destinations. In the interval she met her husband, Jose, at UC Berkeley’s international house, traveled to his country, Argentina, a number of times, and of course became fluent in Spanish.
She started teaching travel and tourism and ultimately designed a new curriculum which she launched at Berkeley City College and directed for more than 30 years. In addition to usual travel courses such as cruises, tours, airline reservations, sales and marketing, she developed a series of one-day classes on more than 25 different countries. And, as the travel industry became more specialized, she designed specialty classes such as Travel Writing, Family Travel, Adventure Travel, and Travel for Women.
Marty is active in San Francisco Travel Professionals and has been a member of the Society of Travel and Tourism Professionals and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). She was twice President of San Francisco Women in Travel and has served on the Advisory Board to the Berkeley Convention and Visitors’ Bureau (Visit Berkeley). She is a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She continues to be an avid traveler and has visited some 47 countries including such special places as Easter Island, the Galapagos Islands, and the Amazon region.

"I owe a lot to Marty's travel certificate program at Berkeley City College. Back in 2000 I really didn’t know how to combine my business skills with my passion for travel and the outdoors, or how to turn that into a full-time career. Marty‘s Adventure Travel class taught me about local adventure companies in the Bay Area and led me to contacts with key people. Ten years later I’m the program Director for Europe at Mountain Travel Sobek and a consultant for USAID and World Learning in Eastern Europe.”
